    First DIY down underquilt

I decided to make a down underquilt for my wife with the hope that if she has good gear, she will camp with me more often. She went a few times during my tent days but always complained that she got cold. I know part of the reason was the thick air mattress that she insisted on using.

I was able to get her out for one night last year in a hammock. I put two big sleeping bags in the hammock for her so she had 3 layers under her and one over the top. She said that this was the warmest that she has ever slept while camping. So I decided that I would try to make her a 20 degree underquilt.

I wanted to make it custom for her so I ordered three colors of hyper D 1.0 from RBTR, along with shock cord and the other items that I needed. I also decided to use down from a couple of the Costco blankets. This is my first attempt at making a quilt and I don't know how much it will get used so I didn't want to spend too much.

The purple and grey are for the outside and black for the inside.

I cut the material and sewed the outer shell together.

I laid out the baffles using masking tape for my guide lines.

The baffles are sewn to the inner and outer shell.

The cord channels are sewn in and draft collar attached at one end. Time for the down!

I used the vacuum and transferred the down from the Costco blankets to the new quilt.

The final end was closed and the last draft collar and cord channel was added. I just need to add the suspension. The weight before the suspension is 25.6 oz. don't look real close at the stitching as it is not the straightest. I think it turned out pretty good, hopefully my wife will like it and if she doesn't, the colors are fine for me.

Nice job! I think she will love it Is there a chance you can do a picture of the outside again with better lighting?

Nice Job! I think she will like it. My wife was a little unsure of the hammock camping until I made her a set to use. She's still not ready for Winter or Summer camping but like's the Spring and Fall.

Thanks! I didn't have any other long surface to work on and I didn't really want to work on the floor.

Very nice work. It turned out great! I recently finished my first down UQ myself. It's so satisfying making something so nice isn't it?
