    Daughter's New DIY Hammock

Been meaning to post a number of my recent DIY projects, so thought I'd start with my most recent.

As my 6 year old daughter becomes more and more fascinated with watching me construct gear and hammocks in general, I thought it would be a great time to update her old DIY hammock with something I was more proud of and even better suited for her. My skills had grown tremendously from the time I built her last hammock and I'm very please with how this one turned out. She was, too

I started with 4 yards of deep purple 1.6 NylonD. It was the first time I'd worked with Dutch's NylonD and I must say I'm a little sad after knowing it's more or less discontinued. It was a very comfortable fabric and great to work with. It's a pretty standard gathered end design. Side hems double rolled. Triple rolled and triple stitched end channels. Finished length was just shy of 10'.
We had already discussed the design and color scheme during one of Dutch's prior giveaways. Since we didn't win, I still wanted to build her what we had picked out. I liked her purple and black color choices and am very happy with the finished product.

Whoopies and the ridgeline both had a touch of girlish charm added

A large sewn on inner dual pocket, from the NylonD and some black 1.2 PolyD

Amsteel dogbones were added to both end for gear attachment or for pulling herself up.

Her new ridgeline organizer. Dual front pocket. The inner section is open, though injected closed on one side. Full velcro closure. Constructed from RBTR's black HyperD 300 and Dutch's 1.6 NylonD. IF you look closely, there are some green shiny spots along the ridgeline. This was a green led strand that was woven along the length of the ridgeline. A simple switch press and her ridgeline completely lights up.

I added a dual side knotty mod.

and a double sided stuff sack. The stuff sack was made from Dutch's purple Xenon Sil and RBTR's black HyperD 300. Green Lawson reflective lines were used for the cordage on the sack.

a simple tree strap stuff sack from HyperD300

and fortunately she loved it...and has room to grow. I was even happy in my "test" naps. It's amazingly comfortable for a 10' hammock.

Well done! Great example of DIY and how it can compare with any of the commercial products available.

Beautiful hammock. I'm sure she likes that especially since you made it.

There might be a thread on this, but I'm interested in both the purpose and how you made the dual side knotty mod. Does this give you a better lay, or is there another reason. Thanks!

There is indeed a few threads about the mod. Here is one of the main threads, from the DIY's subforum stickies...

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...h-Side-Hammock

I built this on after I had finished much of the hammock and almost mirrored the method used in that thread.

It doesn't really affect the lay of the hammock. Since my daughter is still new to hanging, this mod helps keep her blankets/quilts, pillows, stuffed animals and other gear from falling out of her hammock. I used some very elastic cord, so it gives plenty, but holds good as well. It keep the sides from flopping down.
Also, since she is still small, this helps keep the excess fabric from just falling down on top of her while she's is in the hammock.

Thank you all for the compliments!
