Any issues finding spots to hang along the Katy Trail

    Hey everyone,

I'm planning a trip to ride my bike the length of the Katy Trail this spring. I'm trying to work out some details and one of the things is if there is plenty of places to hang along the trail? Also any suggestions for how to shuttle from the East end in St Charles to the beginning of the trail?

Most of the property asking the Katy is privately owned. Plan your route so your stops coincide with camp grounds, which there are several. For the rest, you would need to ask property owner's permission.

Discover America Trail has a website with all that info, since the Katy is part of that.

just to clarify I wasn't suggesting doing anything illegal. I meant to say was are the campground areas generally hammock useable or do I need to plan on taking a tent?

From what I have read the trail is only open during daylight hours, so no over night camping on the trail. But it might be worth a call to find out for sure.

The Katy Trail State Park, essentially the whole Katy trail has hours of sunrise to sunset. Official website is here. There are numerous facilities along the trail that cater to trail users including several campgrounds. I am not sure how you could easily find out which of those would accommodate hangers without contacting them individually.

The trail passes through primarily private land and there was a considerable brouhaha when the MKT railroad ceased operation on the right of way and the state took the land instead of it reverting to the original owners as specified in the right of way acquisition documents. For this reason there were a few hard feelings among adjacent land owners although original fears of vandalism and other problems have proved unfounded. Also, the homes of most land owners are not immediately adjacent to the trail and will make it difficult to seek permission to camp along the trail, but off the trail right of way itself on private land.

A good resource is bikekatytrail.com which has quite a bit of information including FAQs and a trip planner page. I have biked quite a bit on the trail although not in recent years. It is a very beautiful trail although fairly flat which does not give much out of the saddle time for "bun" relief.

    Katy Trail Thread Bump

Am planning to cycle the Katy Trail from Clinton to St. Charles next week. Does anyone know if some of the private campgrounds are hammock friendly? Windsor, Sedalia, Hartsburg, and Portland are of particular interest to me.
