I refuse to even look in the general direction of whoopie slings.

You people know better than most what kind of rare OCD I have. What happens if I like them? Then, I have to go through all of my hammocks and change out the rings and webbing suspensions that live on most of them. Once that is done, because I never sell gear, I'd end-up with a huge pile of webbing, a few dozen lightweight biners, and countless rings.

Eventually, Genuine Draft would start working the math. She would then discover that there is a whole bunch of money sitting in that pile doing nothing. Further reflection would lead her down the path of wondering what I spent on replacement materials. Her final revelation would be in determining that I am in severe need of a butt kicking. Then she'd probably make me sleep in a bed for a long time and take her shoe shopping.

Nope. Not even looking at them.

Or...you could make one really nice set, and put them on whatever hammock you happened to be using at the time...

That would give you a chance to 'tinker' with something before each outing, as well as pressing a bit of your currently unused webbing into service as tree huggers..

    C'mon Cannibal...bang the rocks together...progress isn't necessarily evil.

I'd imagine the Whoopies will become the suspension of choice eventually ,though it's interesting to see webbing holding it's own.

I will certainly make some whoopies or atleast try to make some as soon as I can find the correct rope in the UKHere we go again.

You missed the OCD part didn't you?

That's like saying I could just get one hammock to tinker with; I think I had three the first 3 months you people infected me. My 3 year anniversary of being 'sick' is coming up and can already use a different hammock every month and not sleep in the same one twice for a little over two years.

If I go and start switching out to whoopie slings, Genuine Draft may well use one of them to hang me.

Still not looking, just peeking around the corner when nobody is looking.

As soon as I find a knife sharp and tough enough to cut Amsteel, I am making some also!

Hey would a whoopie sling work for me even though i'm like 295 pounds. wouldn't it slip?

i've heard that the spike/toggle doesn't support any of the weight but still i'm concerned i might bend whatever is there and end up on the floor (no more ground for me!) has anyone heard of that?

and finally how do you tie off the webbing straps to/around the tree?
anyone have any videos or points of reference for me?

So the consensus seems to be that the sling is the way to go. So is the 7/64 amsteel sufficient and how is everyone attaching the sling to the tree strap? I've seen the marlin spike hitch used but in that setup how is the strap attached around the tree and what is the marlin tied in?

I had to laugh at this because I'm staring at a pile of webbing (four complete sets) just to the left of the chair I'm sitting in, and a desktop littered with cinch buckles, rings, and biners. The changeover was swift.

Absolutely, a WS will work fine to hold you up. If you want more 'safety' margin, though, just make the rope bury longer. The longer the bury, the stronger the sling. Remember that 1/8th" Amsteel is rated to ~2500lbs.

You can use whatever you're comfortable with for a toggle. But, the toggle holds far less force than you might imagine.

Here's a direct link to Grizz's demo on tying a marlinspike hitch, upon which a whoopie sling can be hung.

    A little help !!

Use a utility knife - change blade often - the blades are cheap and sharp.
