I only cut out 2 strands with the 8-strand 7/64. This all is REALLY EASIER than you may think.

Don't worry. I did a dumb thing and took Opie up on his offer.

How do y'all deal with frayed ends on Amsteel? Melt with a lighter, or will it need to high of a temp?
Bury the end - same as a fixed eye except the eye is pulled closed. Don't need as much bury as for a fixed eye.

Makes for a finished end with no loose strands.

I use a knitting needle, and tape the rope to the end. Its time consuming, but it works right now, and keeps the cost down.

Yes but webbing and rings or buckles has been used a lot longer.

    Hmm 2 years?

    Seems longer.

    No needle to thread.

I use a piece of stiff yet flexible wire doubled up into about a foot-long narrow loop. I PUSH it through the FAR end of the bury, toward the intended eye. When it emerges, I put the tapered Amsteel into the loop of wire and PULL it back through the bury. It cinches the Amsteel and passes through VERY easily.

I used to make whoopies and other splices on a regular basis aboard ship, and even though I had all the tools, I found the wire method by far the easiest. YMMV

I mash the end flat between thumb and forefinger, and push the frayed part through the elongated yarn needle eye. Then pull it through far enough that it doubles back when I push it through the bury. To make the doubled back portion less bulky I remove half of the strands beforehand, which I need to do anyway for a taper in the back or eye splice that goes on the end.

that sounds like the ticket. was it you that mentioned using a wire to me the other day? i wouldn't have thought of doing it that way.
