But when I look at the pics it seems to be more complicated and I must be missing some steps.
You got it. Actually simpler...you don't have to cut holes...compress the line by pushing one end toward the other and the weave will open up. Tapering the end just makes it easier to pass (or pull) through.

The taper is more important when you are doing a permanent eye or similar as it becomes part of the working line and bears a load. You want smooth transitions.

It REALLY is easier than it looks...and it looks easy.

No cutting of holes needed. Just thread the cord in through itself. It's not a complicated process at all. If you look at Grizz's video at 3:49, it shows exatly how to make one. It's that simple. If I can do it, anyone can and I'm totally DIY impaired.

Count me in. My pack weight is low enough that I don't have to fret about a potential 3oz weight savings. WBG's strap system is freaking awesome and I don't want to give it up.

Then again, I only have one tarp and one hammock.

I have webbing on my BB and Whoopie slings on my DIY. WS is less bulky and just fun tinkering. When I tie the Marlin Spike on my dutch cliped webbing with my toggle I just feel cool .... like I am doing something.
Though I still like webbing with desender rings and a dutch clip. It is all fun .... and works.
Options ..... that is all. For the dinker.

I'll end up with Whoopie slings, if only for the name of them alone ... but I'll still be carrying small tree hugger straps to protect the trees, right? So I'm only subtracting the weight of part of a strap on each side and also the 'biners. Or am I missing something?

Oh, and also the weight of the cinch buckles/rings, so I can see how that adds up.

Could somebody point me to an instruction on replacing my stock ropes on my HH?

Once I get that figured out I will be ordering 2 sets from Opie.
    I ride a recumbent.
I like to HAM it up on the CW.
    I use Linux.
    I play go.
Of course I sleep in a hammock!

Opie has got me hooked up with some black ones already, but thank you very much for the offer . Even got a warning about the dye being a little 'leaky'.
Of course I couldn't resist a deal on cordage, so I made my order for some Amsteel myself this morning.
