If you don't try due to fear of failure you've already failed due to fear.

Thanks, Spacecadet. Is there a difference between 8 strand and 12 strand amsteel for making whoopie slings? The local west marine to me has 12 strand, but it's almost double the price

    Moradiss,
7/64" is 8-stranded, 1/8" and up is 12-stranded. There's no difference in whoopie sling construction, just the differnence in breaking strength. Be aware that the fid or wire you use for 1/8" stuff may be too big for working with the 7/64" stuff. There are a couple threads on the forum that discuss this. I use a guitar high E string for my work and it's great/easy. Haven't gone with any Amsteel bigger than 7/64" yet....

I buy locally from a large West Marine. A smaller one carries no Amsteel.

West Marine price matches. They say so on their web page.

Just insist, and give them the web page URL for Redden Marine. They can (likely) look it up right at the register.
I don't push for the 5% HF discount, as I'm not paying shipping charges, either.

I still need to learn how to make whoopie slings, but a great deal for me to start. I hope to learn at the Santee Hang this weekend.

Zing-It (and Lash-It) is a particular small single braid cord from Samson Rope made with 8 strands of Amsteel fiber, in two weights. Neither are strong enough to hang a 180+ lb adult from with what is accepted as an adquate safety margin.

Amsteel in various grades (AS 75, 78,90) and following different processing is the currently best-selling and branded name of the UHMWPE fiber that was preceeded in the market by Spectra.

Diameter for diameter, Amsteel has about the same strength and stretch properties of high-grade steel wire. Since its density is about that of water, it has about eight times the strength, by weight, of steel wire. For order of magnitude comparison: Its strength is about twice that of high-grade polyester or dacron fiber. It is very slippery, and so abrasion-resistant. But, it holds knots very poorly.

Extensive archival discussion here and on the general www.

I dont know if its so much runs(as in when it rains) as the color rubs off some on your hands when working with it. I have only used the original grey and yellow. The gray does rub off some, but not bad and the yellow seems to not rub off at all! Of course that could be just because I cant see the yellow as good on my hands.
