I would compare it more to a very cushy couch. You're butt/back/torso is the heaviest part and will sink a little deeper. Not exactly "flat", but flat enough. I think sleeping on my back in bed is about the least comfortable position ever...something reserved for a dead body in a casket. But in my hammock, it just feels right.

You'll have to spend the time, and unfortunately the money, to find the "sweet spot" for you. I'm 5'7" and like a 10 to 10.5ft hammock but I'm more interested in weight. I've tried an 11 ft hammock and it was a bit more comfortable/flatter but much more than that and you start to run into issues with quilts and extra material being annoying (hence the knotty mods). Get too wide or too long and you'll encounter other issues. I'm a side sleeper in bed but manage to sleep well enough in a hammock on my back. Bridge hammocks are flat but I suspect there are trade offs there too; such as shoulder squeeze or feeling like you're in a tube.

I guess what I'm saying is that there'll be some experiementing and tweeking in order for you to find what works for you and what works for others won't always work for you. In the end, if you do find that "sweet spot", it's all worth it!

Was just reading some of the threads on the AMOK Draumr 3.0... Looks really cool! Claim is that you get flat enough to stomach sleep...almost impossible with a gathered-end hammock (I've tried...just no). Shug seems to be sold on it (maybe watch his review) which is big. Maybe look at that in addition to bridge hammocks. Don't think you will ever get "completely horizontal" in a gathered end...

You can check out the Hammock Bliss Sky Bed. You need a pad to really make it work but I'm pretty much completely flat in it and sleep on my sides better than I do in my bed.
