    Another newbie from Texas

Good evening. I recently got into Hammocks/Hammock camping. I used my hammock (Grand Trunk Traveler) successfully on my last 3 camping trips to great effect.

I work with the local Varsity Scout Troop and we are going to be doing a MYOG section in preparation for our upcoming High Adventure. I have already learned a ton from these forums including getting in on the Costco Down Throw fun...I've already made a summer Top Quilt and Under Quilt...tested it last night in our lovely 40 degree weather. I will be hanging out in the DIY section...between my nature to pursue the deal (thus the screen name, which I have used for over 15 years now) and the need to meet budget constraints for the Scout Troop we are going to be doing a lot of sewing/deal hunting.

If anyone has suggestions for budget tarps...that seems to be the budget strainer now.

Welcome from far West Texas, MYOG is a great way to introduce self reliance to scouts. Regarding tarps, I would suggest you pickup the cheapest Ripstop you can find, make your DIY tarps and then treat them with silicone yourself. It's the most cost effective yet provides a true learning experience. It will also build appreciation for the fantastic SilNylon and SilPoly from our various vendors. The DIY SilNylon will be heavier but If made right will work every bit as well as the commercial stuff.

Let us know how you make out and what you decide to do.
