    7.65 oz (217 g) Hammock WITH Suspension!

I'm currently testing the Grand Trunk Nano 7 Hammock, which is the lightest commercial hammock I've ever used (or seen). Alone, the Nano weighs only 5 oz (142 g). When I added my "bombproof" suspension, I more than tripled the weight of the Nano!

Disappointed, I researched the forums and learned a TON about new materials and methods for suspension. After switching to Whoopie Slings, toggles, and 1 in (2.54 cm) webbing straps, I brought the hammock to a mere 7.65 oz (217 g) complete!

I am using Amsteel Blue 7/64 in (.3 cm) cord, an aluminum stake cut in half for the two toggles, and 1 in webbing straps. I did an eye splice directly through the hammock and my buries are as small and tight as I dare get them.

I owe a lot to this forum (specifically SloBro and GrizzlyAdams) for the information on Whoopie Slings, which was really the catalyst for the amazing weight drop.

You can read my review at BackpackGearTest.org, which will be updated over the next few months.

It's certainly not as big as some, but it's actually larger than others.

The Hennessy Expedition Asym is 100 x 48 in.
The Grand Trunk Nano 7 is 108 x 48 in.

So, it's not really the hammock dimensions that cut down on weight, it's also because it doesn't come standard with a built-in bug net, tarp, zippers, or suspension system.

However, with a simple suspension system, like what I used (whoopie slings, toggle, webbing), 7.7 oz is pretty amazing. Add a 11 oz MacCat tarp, and you're just over a 1 lb super shelter.

Yes, I'd love to make the AZ Hang -- sounds like a blast.

I'm all about going light too. I started off with a HH Expedition and over the years have paired down to simpler, modular systems. Integrated bug nets, for example, are nice, but when the bugs are down, it's just wasted weight, in my opinion.

I love the comfort, low-weight, and low-bulk of hammocks generally, but there is a point (usually winter camping) when weight and bulk really become the tipping point on whether hammocks are worth it, compared with other ground-dwelling systems (in saying that, I've yet to go to the ground, preferring a chilled sleep over rocks and roots).

I'm slowly warming up to underquilts, but I need to find one that is the right weight and fit so I don't feel like I'm packing two sleeping bags.

i believe the length of the expidetion is longer than what you gave, i think the 100" is the length of the ridgeline

Yes, very likely. And it's not 100% fair comparison since the HH is asymmetric and the Nano is a simple, hemmed design. That said, the Nano feels about as roomy as my HH Exp Asym, probably because there is no bug net. I'm 5'10' and the HH Exp Asym feels tight to me.

so to follow your lead, im going to purchase the nano 7 and combine it with my HH tree huggers (4'), aluminum arrow shaft toggles, the shortest WhoOpie slings he sells, and add a ridgeline to the Nano.
im hoping to get it right at 7oz.
one thing for sure, ive been on this forum for over a year and watching the improvements and evolution of hanging is truly refreshing. to think before i read your post i was carrying a 12.6oz hammock.. Gasp!

Just curious, could you do a single line suspension out of Amsteel Blue with each end a made into a whoopie sling and save any weight?
