    Porch Mode

I tried out "Porch Mode" on our last hiking/camping trip. It was a rather warm evening and I was surprised how much it help cool things down.

I was using an Asym tarp from HH. We experienced light rain during the night

Question does a tarp with 4 tie downs instead of 2 (like the Asym) provide better rain coverage in "Porch Mode"

    Thanks for the assistance.

    TF

A larger tarp provides better rain coverage in all modes. I started out with the Hennessy Asym fly and now have an 11x10 tarp. I like the simplicity of the Asym and prefer it for fair weather. I can have a party under the 11x10.

I love me a good porch mode setup! I even keep it up at least half the time in winter for air flow to reduce condensation. And I simply like waking up to see the view! That's worth losing a few degrees of relative warmth IMO.

With a larger hex shape tarp (i.e. Warbonnet Mamajamba), it's important to make sure you have the porch "roof" taut and at enough of an angle towards the ground to let rain drain out. Otherwise you may wake up in the middle of the night finding gallons of water in a "bowl" above you

I almost only pitch my tarp in porch mode. Yes you get a lot better coverage with a bigger tarp, many of us use a Hex shaped tarp and you get better side to side coverage and with one side down and one up you can still block wind and moisture from one side while getting the view and easier access on that side.

I have personally never understood the attraction of porch mode, possibly because I never enter my hammock until I want to go to sleep. When it's nighttime, you don't need a view.

For blowing precipitation, it doesn't matter how many tie-outs you have. You're going to get wet in porch mode anyway. I generally always set my tarp up the same way regardless of weather conditions. The only difference is whether I close my doors or leave them open.

I like the porch mode if it is nice outside, and if I forget my chair and I am using my hammock as a chair.

always in porch mode unless the wind/and/or rain demand otherwise. nighttime included. i go without a tarp on most calm nights, hot, medium, or cold.

That's funny. Definitely got a laugh out of that!!! I love the night time view, especially in the winter or across a body of water!

    Porch Mode

Topless(pitched in the skin) when possible, porch mode when necessary, always ready to close down quickly.
