ooooh ooooh oooooh! Hat geek here!

Grosgrain that has tiny scallops along the edge is properly called petersham - used for making hatbands (inside and outside the hat), among other things.

Petersham is cool stuff (but probably not necessary for outdoor gear) because it can be steamed into a curve and still lie flat (since hats are generally conic sections so one edge of the petersham is going to be shorter than the other).
It can also be folded over the edge of a plate and steamed into a curve. I've done that for finishing hatbrims.
If you really want to know more about working with petersham.
If you want to play with petersham, millinery supply places will carry it.

If I have a gear application where I want to bind a curved edge, then I just get nylon bias binding from someplace like questoutfitters.

The lower quality grosgrain has a much lower tolerance to wear, particularly on the edges. Not quite petersham like eay had described, but the OWFINC GGR is far, far superior to anything walmart and probably JoAnne has to offer - consistent and durable (just what you're looking for).

I've never heard of the other stuff. I look and feel the grosgain and really wonder if makes a difference in edging out the trim. Maybe only using 1/2" for tieouts and 1" tiouts for the ridgeline - in case I have to go to ground and need to use the poles. Any thoughts?

It's the "Real stuff" scalloped edges & all, I got it at Hancock Fabrics in Cincinnati. That store has since closed, but I do from time to time get near another on the other side of town.

It's certainly not necessary, but if you want it because you like the looks and how it strengthens the edges, go for it. Your best bet is probably to use 1" folded in half. I'd guess probably a little less than half use gross grain on the edges. It adds extra weight, and it's extra work, but boy does it look nice.

Of the commercial / cottage industry tarp manufacturers, OES, Warbonnet, and Cooke Custom Sewing use gross grain (or similar material) on edges (there are, I'm sure, many more). Of those, OES is the one that uses it in the fashion that you're probably thinking.

I don't use it, nor do Speer tarps and I'm fairly sure JRB doesn't as well. I don't use it because of the large nature of my tarps - I don't want that extra weight added.

Take a look through the galleries here and search for different tarp makers to see some of the details on their style of edging.

    I order mine from OWFinc.com They have 3/8 - 1 1/2 " the 3/4 and 1" come in various colors.

IMO it is stiffer that the JoAnn Fab. stuff. Also the JoAnn GGR comes in odd widths. SO don't go in looking for 1/2", 3/4 or 1'. I recall they were 3/8, 5/8 and 7/8.

Thanks. The reason I had asked is I never really saw them in pictures. So I had no idea if they were really being put on often or not. The grosgain is probably put on along the underside rather than the top which is why I don't notice it. I haven't noticed grosgain having any noticeable weight, so it's hard to imagine it makes a significant difference. If a few ounces will help then it's gotta be worth it - especially on a winter tarp. Norther Indiana gets some serious wind in the winter.

I have a tarp where I put the ribbon (.25-.375?) inside the double rolled hem.
