Grosgain - ribbon or webbing?

I have a tarp where I put the ribbon (.25-.375?) inside the double rolled hem.

Thanks. The reason I had asked is I never really saw them in pictures. So I had no idea if they were really being put on often or not. The grosgain is probably put on along the underside rather than the top which is why I don't notice it. I haven't noticed grosgain having any noticeable weight, so it's hard to imagine it makes a significant difference. If a few ounces will help then it's gotta be worth it - especially on a winter tarp. Norther Indiana gets some serious wind in the winter.

Tipically when the GGR is used, it's for edging. As Sclittlefield said you would take 1" and fold it so half of it is on the top and the other half on the bottom of the Tarp. Besides the added strenght and weight, it does give nice contrasting detial to the tarp.

I haven't used the GGR on a tarp yet. Not sure that I would. It seems that the GGR would be more labor intensive than doing a Rolled hem.
But maybe i'm looking at it the hard way.

I used it as edging, 1 inch exactly as you described. It wasn't a lot of work and did provide a really nice finished detail. Besides, I am married to an artist, and the contrast of the green tarp with the purple edging of the GGR was a great use of color.

Wonderful. I never thought of folding the grosgain and putting it on both sides of the tarp! Probably two straight lines along the edges of the grospain and hemming the rolled edge prior to the grosgain once should be about right.

Exactly. With 1" webbing and some practice on scraps, it's not too difficult to apply both layers at once, simultaneously applying it to both ends of the fabric edge.

Also, to make it easier for a beginner, try doing a very quick simple hem/fabric fold over along the perimeter - it will give you more of a defined tarp edge when dealing with applying the webbing.

not entirely sure of the source- I picked up two 100yd rolls for 3$ each (from a clothing merchant at Pennsic- I asked if that was really the price, then I bought two..) but it was more than likely from an industrial supplier rather a home/craft supplier; if that helps any.KM

Thanks - I was just curious about hemming higher quality gross grain along a cat-curve, flat (not folded over). The OWFinc stuff is so much stiffer than the generic stuff, I wonder if it would curve well enough.

I'm debating on using the JoAnn's Fabric grosgain because of the coupons. I'm about to start making my hammock and then my tarp, so I have about a week to decide on the tarp. Doing the cat cuts, I think, precludes DIY tarps with grosgain. My guess it's either you do straight edges and have the option of grosgain OR you do cat cuts and don't use grosgain. Either way you'll need to roll your edges.
