Four suggestions for you.
1) As mentioned above, do a You Tube search on Shug Hammock and watch them all. Worth every minute you will spend doing that.
2) Go to http://theultimatehang.com/ and read, read, read. Derek does a great job of explaining and has great drawings to show you what he means.
3) Read the sticky threads at the top of each section of Hammock Forums. You will find valuable information there that is not captured else where.
4) Find a hang that is close to you and attend it. The US is broken down by geographic areas in the forum so you can review threads there to see what might be local to you. Even if you don't spend the weekend with the group, just showing up is good. People will show you what they have and how they use it. This is the best way to spend your $ wisely.
You will be busy for a few days/weeks and end up in information overload but that is only way you will learn. No one can really make recommendations on what you should or should not but. Each of us are very different in what we comfortable in.
