Asym tarp, any different from rectangular pitched diagonally?

    Hi Guys,

I have various bigger tarps for British winter/rainey hammock camping.
But for summer I like to save the weight and have a smaller summer tarp, a rectangular TW hammocks 10' x 5' wide, which if pitched in an A frame covers the hammock ok. Obviously in an asym lay you do poke quite close to your head and feet with a simple rectangle 5' wide.

So out of curiosity I tried pitching it diagonally as if it were an Asym tarp but obviously without cutting off bits to make it a true asym.

It felt pretty **** close on the narrow edges even though I was leaning asymmetrically away from them.

Is this an accurate feel of how good a coverage an asym tarp gives?
Because personally from that test I preferred the A frame position.

Any thoughts on the lightest summer tarp options would be appreciated.

Rectangle hung diagonally just gives you more ridgeline coverage but you need to hang it in the same direction of your lay... Feels weird cause your feet and head are close to the tarp but it's so open just on the other side. I don't like it but it can work in a straight down rain... Any rain coming in from the side and it doesn't really work to good. And I've used a bit bigger tarp to try it out, 10'x5' would be to small for me to be comfortable I think. If your set on that size I think I would just do the a-frame thing...

To stay about the same weight and increase coverage you could do an 8'x8' for just a bit more weight... The ridge ends up at 11.3' and you would have a bit better coverage from the side...

The Asym is basically the diamond with the points that are down at the ground cut off cause they don't really do much. Definately more coverage than the rectangle and getting back closer to the weight of the smaller rectangle hung in a simple a-frame...

Not wedded to 10'x5' at all. Just what I had. If it's worth bothering with different dimensions I will make my own.
I had a suspicion the lesser width was making it worse but wasnt sure.

I will try 8'x8' and see how it works.

I know asym tarps aren't popular for anything but light rain. Starting to see why.

    Thanks

I used a blue backpackers tarp from Walmart for years like that. It's 5 x 8 (or maybe 7x10?) if I recall. Works great most of the time but you have to hang it kind of low to keep off the side angle rain, even so in a good storm wind would blow rain under and I'd get spray on my face. Now that I have my bigger tarp (WL Bullfrog) I prefer that. I realized that the bigger tarp doesn't cost that much in terms of weight or bulk compared to other things and I can hang it high enough to stand under it, pitch it wide open, or close it way down. Just having the option of standing up beside the hammock during a down pour to put my rain gear on is worth the tiny bit of extra weight IMO.
