I'm Getting Scared How Low Can you Go!

Ok Arrowhead Gear owners, I have a 3 season KAQ that is gonna get a good test this weekend

I am headed to the mountains of NC and it's supposed to be about 14° Sunday night and about 29° the rest of the nights I'm staying.

For those KAQ owners, am I gonna freeze or should I be OK?

My top quilt is an old North Face that I have taken to about 11° and was still toasty

I have a 3 season New River that I have used down to 29. I was comfy. I haven't seen any lower temps to test.

What is the wind supposed to be like?

I have a 70d tarp with doors you are welcome to borrow if you can swing by the Asheville area on your way. It's heavy and you'll need to provide your own lines for it, but it will block the wind and keep some more warmth around you.

What about a piece of reflectix as my pad and if so where should I locate it?

Under the hammock, under me, between the hammock and under quilt?

I have a thermarest scout I can use. Where do I put it?

Unless you have a double layer to secure the pad you should put it between you and the hammock. If you put it between the underquilt and hammock the quilt won't sung it up, and you'll have cold spots.

I have used reflectix as a pad before. I put it inside of a fleece sleeping bag liner and slept on the whole thing. I just had a light summer UQ at the time, and made it to -4 degrees F. I won't lie, I was cold! But I made it. I'm a very cold sleeper, too. The pad helped a lot, but I'm sure a real camping pad would have been better.

Pay heed to what dingbat said. I have camped the smokies a few times. and while temps were supposed to be in the 30-40's, the wind on those mountains changes things. A steady 10mph wind will easily make that 14 degrees feel like 5.

Just to be safe, I'd bring an extra wool sweater, and some hand warmers to be able toss in your top and bottom quilts.

    Have fun!

I took a 4s KAQ comfort rating of 10 to -12 last year and was okay... But a pad would have helped.
