I'm just west of you. In edge of TN just above Florence. I use a 20° UQ. Works good for the climate in our area. For what few nights that's below the rating it can always be augmented with a pad. I personally don't hang below around 30°. Being old, that's about as cold as the bones can take.

Depending on what temps you are going to hang in...... why not both?

Snugpak underblanket and snugpak hammock blanket. You can get both together for under $100. Will work to the mid 30s for most people, some take the pair lower (I do not).

VT Army Navy has sales now and then, I was able to get the Snugpak Hammock blanket (top quilt) for like $35, and the underblanket at the time was like $42 (got mine from amazon weeks before at $52). Pretty great deals. Even without sales, they are on amazon right now, for about $105 for both. Plus side is, if you have amazon prime, you could have your top quilt and underquilt 2 days from now. No waiting.

well now I know this is an unpopular opinion but I think you should buy the underquilt first ..

insulation "travelsoft" filling. It doesn't give a temperature rating but the comments and reviews have testimonials.

I don't have either but had looked them up too so wanted to share the links if you had a hard time finding it... too bulky for my purposes (multi-day backpacking) but looks to be an inexpensive option for car camping or starter / loaner gear.

Edited to Add: just realized you're in the ATL too! Waving from Dunwoody

You're correct that they don't give ratings. There are a few threads here if you search, with several testimonials, including my own.

I only picked up the top quilt because of VT Army navy's holiday sale. It was like $35 and free shipping, so I said what the heck.

Yes, the combo is a little bulky, although no more so than typical synthetic quilts I'd say. I was using a 20 deg unzipped mummy bag before the snugpak hammock quilt, and it's cut down my weight and freed up pack space significantly compared to the sleeping bag.

UQ first no doubt about it. Seriously when I got my first UQ and then laid in my hammock I was amazed..it was like a heater instantly switched on. I love UQ's and respect them so much. I'm sure you have a bag of some kind that can get you through as a TQ.

Without knowing the usage & requirements I will say that I have found that my Hammock Gear Incubator 20 UQ has been great in every respect. Packs small (as most down UQs would) and is light, keeps me comfortable and my butt warm.

My down sleeping bag seems to work just fine as a top quilt, I might buy an actual down TQ at some point but it isn't a high priority.
