Clark Jungle Hammock

Ok, after doing some looking around, this is what I think I'm going with, let me know if I miss anything.

I plan of getting a North American Hammock from Clarks and they tell me if I pad the pockets (with gear or cloths) and maybe just use some type of closed cell pad for the base (to sleep on and maybe keep the hammock more spread) and a mummy bag (rated accordingly) I'll be fine to 0 or so. My thoughts are to buy the hammock and a wally world pad or this as posted above (http://moontrail.com/sleeping_pads/e...rmattress.html and ), then get a 20 bag and supplement with a fleece blanket or additional layers as needed.

I'm planning for 0 to 100 degrees but will realistically be doing 50-80 degrees.

Any thoughts, I'm pretty new to this and don't want to sink money in that I can better spend on ammo, hookers or beer

I have my doubts about getting to zero with that bottom insulation setup, but you could probably get pretty low...20s maybe. I do think there are better, lighter, and cheaper ways to go about things. As far as commercial products go, you could get a Hennessy hammock and Speer SPE, saving both money and weight. Just as an example. If you sew, the options are pretty much limitless.

For the price of the Clack hammocks you could buy 2 Hennessey's. The Clark website states that the North American is the only 4 season hammock. Bull. Any hammock with a closed cell foam pad can get you around there. $360 is down right too much but I am a budget man. I got my Hennessey as an irregular for $100. I think you need to ask around more from people who own Clark's. Also like I told my little brother when he wanted a Clark " You wouldn't go out and buy a unicycle if you never rode a bike before". Find out if you even like to hammock before you spend the rent.

Oh pooh, you guys make this too hard. Why can't it be as easy as building a 67 mustang fastback or implementing a million dolloar content management system.

Don't go by price alone. Clarks are good hammocks from what I hear, and they have their fans, but they're certainly not the industry leader and certainly not the only hammock usable in winter.

I use the Exped Downmat 7. It might take me to 0F if there were no wind. I felt a chill in the high teens at Mt Rogers but it was very windy.

I'm skeptical of the Clark's pockets keeping you warm. They'll help a bit for summer, and maybe shoulder seasons, but to really stay warm you need lofted insulation or pads. And if you're carrying enough gear to fill up those pockets to act as insulation, you have bigger problems to worry about!!

But I'm sure they're convenient storage, and like I said Clarks have their fans.

Check out a Hennessy or a Speer hammock. Then, no matter which you choose (even the Clark), pick your insulation separately...pads, pads w/ a Speer SPE, underquilts or PeaPods (my favorites).

See, I appreciate info like this, but I’m looking to get product and advice from people who have been there and done that rather than muck around with it myself.

Can you suggest a set up for mainly 40-80 degrees but can go real low if presses? Weight isn’t too much of an issue since I’m not going on any 20 mile hikes anytime soon.

I can see the Clark, pad and a good 10 degree bag doing almost anything I need to do, baring the extreme sudden bad weather.

So can a Hennessy, pad and 10F bag. Or a Speer, pad and 10F bag. Or a homemade hammock, pad and 10F bag.

And the homemade one costs about $10 to make. Spend the extra $350 on ammo, hookers and beer.
