    Shorter Whoopies?

So I just got my 2.2 Kevlar straps in the mail from Dutch yesterday. I was about to sit down to make some whoopie slings with hooks to go on then and that got me thinking about it. Typically, here are on the east coast where I do a majority of my backpacking, the trees are all younger and thinner. When I use my 6' Whoopies, I always have a lot of extra cordage.

So I'm curious...does anyone use shorter whoopie slings than the industry standard of 6'?

I had whoopies made for me by one of the older forum members and he made them 5 ft. His words were, "you normally don't need more".

Just out of curiosity, how long are the Kevlar straps that you ordered? I see Dutch sells them in different lengths. My thinking lately has been "the longer the tree straps are, the shorter the whoopies I can possibly get away with".

I'm sure people do. I don't. I use 8' whoopies. I prefer to have it and not need it, and I have never needed it. For how light and small they are, I don't see any point in not having the extra length. I even carry an extra strap and whoopie.

I say go for it. Worst case senerio you're out 5 bucks in amsteel that you could repurpose for dogbones, CL, etc if you decide they don't work for you. Isn't that the fun? Striving to find the perfect set up and once you've obtained hanging bliss, change it all around to try something new?!

I started with 10 ft. whoopie slings and 8 ft. straps. I now use 6 ft. whoopies and 4 ft. straps. The East Coast trees really don't warrant longer.

I would personally not go any shorter than 6 ft. on the whoopie slings. There's very litte to gain.

if you're car camping, play w/ different combinations

if you're hoofin-it, consider the weight gain w/ longer straps & shorter whoopsies

    more strap - more weight

¿ @ 27¢/ft what is your real savings by cutting off a couple feet ?

that extra couple feet might make it possible to hang in a really cool spot ±

having options is more desirable for this old man...

This is generally true. However, with 2.2g Kevlar straps- the straps are actually lighter per foot of suspension vs whoopieslings (assuming 7/64 amsteel is used). Amsteel is about 1.5g per ft. And it's doubled in the fixed eye and adjustable bury so you're at about 3.0g per ft.

Also, as an east coaster I find I'm rarely lacking in reaching anchors but with whoopies the min hang due to the bury is too long.

If the becket hitch holds with the new Kevlar straps I think an all strap suspension would be better.

If you're looking to cut weight make some UCR's. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...To-Make-an-UCR

I make mine 6' and rarely need the full length, with 6' straps, but see no reason to make shorter ones.
