WI > Backpacking trip along NCT on February 25(26)-29

Meeting on NCT trail shelter near Mellen WI thursday night/Friday 8AM at the latest. Walk along NCT about 7 miles, from there - we go off trail NW towards St Pete's dome. We will camp somewhere around the dome and on Saturday morning we can climb it (without the gear) and visit Morgan Falls, or just relax and watch it from the bottom for some extra time. Then we go back to NCT by a different set of unpaved roads and trails to hit NCT again. From there, along NCT as far as we can until the end of the day (10 miles, more or less). If we reach shelter, it's good, if not - we will have to walk more on Sunday morning (and see more cool views in the daylight!). The car will be waiting on the trailhead where NCT crosses FR202 (not far from the shelter).

It is somewhat challenging backpacking trip, not a camping trip, not beginner's level by any means. Prior winter camping experience is highly recommended. We have a few meetups in WI before the date, if you want to try it out in a more comfortable camping conditions

I plan to incorporate a hammock into my backpacking system and anyone who wants to join is more than welcome. If you want to join, find this trip on Meetup in "Wilderness Adventure" group, or "Milwaukee Campers, Backpackers & Hikers" group.

Ambitious indeed! I might be able to get there Fri night, if there's a place I can park and meet up with the gang.

I'd have to say I'm a solid maybe. I'd have to pull a pulk, not sure I'd want to pull it that far. But, I'm following the thread and will know more I the next week or so. Sounds like it could be a good challenge.

Hi Goobie. First night (thursday to friday) we will meet and stay near the NCT trail shelter. You are most welcome to just hang for one night with us, or decide to go all the way.
Either way would be great. If you can find "Milwaukee Campers, Backpackers & Hikers" on Meetup and register, then it would be the best. Also, pm me your phone and I'll give you mine.

Hi Swung! One of the organizers of the trip will be pulling a pulk. So, we will be bound to his speed. Find us on the meetup, "Milwaukee Campers, etc" - there is a detailed plan. We might be setting a base camp on the second night and then climbing St.Pete's dome without the weight. If you decide to join, pm me with your phone and I'll give mine

We made it. 8 miles 1st day, 8 miles second and 5 more miles on the last day because we were running a bit late. 3 days of hanging for me in different conditions - 1st night 14F and night setup, 2nd night - thawing and windy, 3rd night - icy and thawing in the evening, turning into 20s and light snowfall. I guess I built some routine and were able to play with different setups and found what worked for me.
