Looking for place to hang around Escanaba Michigan, June 2016

My wife and I will be in Escanaba in early June, and I'm looking for a place to hang. I know about Pioneer Trail Park & Campground, but I have no idea if they're hammock friendly, and if they are which sites are better?

Can anyone with knowledge of the area give me any insight? Looking for space for 2 hangers.

    Thanks!!

Hey, that's close to me! I'm in Iron Mountain, MI. I'm not super familiar with hanging places around Esky, though. How far are you willing to travel? IM is about 45 minutes away, and most of the places I hang would be a bit further away, yet.

45 Minutes is a bit of a drive.

We're going to the Grind In at Bark River Knives, so we need to make it into Escanaba early each day over the weekend. How is the DNR up there with hammocks? I know some states have issues, Michigan is one I'm not to sure on.

Well, the U.P. is sort of a whole different state unto itself. I don't think the DNR cares a whole lot about hammocks one way or the other. That might be different the closer you get to a "big" city like Esky, but I wouldn't think you would have any problems. I'll ask around. I'm going camping with some guys on the 13th that know a lot more places than I do. I'll see if they have any advice for that area.

There is free camping at Haymeadow Creek near Rapid River. That may be too far of a drive but it is a very wooded campground and there is a waterfall there and a hiking trail. Here is a link

Also, you can camp for free on state land. You just need to fill out a dispersed camping permit

There are lots of State Forest Campgrounds and some very nice County campgrounds. Check the DNR website for some and do a search for Michigan County Campgrounds and I am sure you will find something close.

If you want to rough it, the Hiawatha National Forest is nearby. No permit required. You can pretty much camp anywhere for free unless posted otherwise. There are also some minor rules about not blocking forest roads, being a certain distance from bodies of water and maximum amount of days you can stay in one spot (I think 16 consecutive days...shouldn't be a problem!)
