AL > Porters Gap to Cheaha

Looking to do this section of the Pinhoti as an O&B either February 18-21 or March 3-6, depending on the work forecast. Can anyone give me coordinates to the Porters Gap trailhead? How is the parking there or would I be better off starting at Cheaha? Thanks in advance!

I found this looking at this same hike a while back:
Directions: From Talladega (Talladega County) (food, fuel, lodging available), take AL Highway 77 south for 6.2 miles. There is a US Forest Service sign on the left (east) side of the road marking the Porter’s Gap trailhead. Take the short gravel road to the substantial parking area. There are no restrooms or other comforts at this site.

    GPS: 33.3336483 -86.0268484

If you go to these coords you can put Google Maps into street view you can see a decent view of the trail head.

That was my first multi night solo trip last year. Hated stairway to heaven but the rest was great. Plenty of water.

I might be able to give you a shuttle on Feb. 18 so you could thru hike it. The March date I could give you a shuttle or possibly join you if you like.

Thanks Squid! I'll try to figure out which weekend it is and let you know.

I may be in that same area of trail myself the weekend of Feb 20th. If you see a big guy strolling through the woods that looks like a sasquach with a ULA Pack, stop and say "howdy"... BTW, if you type "Porter's Gap" into Google Maps on your phone, it will take you straight there.

Its been a couple of years since I've been to porters gap, but it always seemed like a pretty safe place to park to me. You are right next to a well traveled road, and the parking lot is good sized. Have a great hike! (this a great time of year to hike that section---should be lots of water available!)
Also, ck out http://coosahikerhostel.weebly.com/ she runs a hostel and shuttle service on that section of the Pinhoti---send her a pm for current information about the trail head etc-- Enjoy your hike!

FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
