    About to take the plunge.

Well I sold my heaviest ground shelter and will be giving the BlackBird and edge tarp a try soon. That seems to be the lighter option without loosing a lot of features.

I'll add a cuben tarp later if i need to cut some weight.

I'm sure this will be a fun transition process.

I am not an expert like some of the people on this forum. But my first hammock was a hammeck - you can actually go through old forum posts and learn how David himself went through the process of making them. I found that very comforting. Not only will you spend less money on the hammock itself you know its hand crafted here in the USA. Additionally their entire family was super helpful with all the questions I had about material etc and furthermore you can literally custom order absolutely anything you want. www.hammeck.com

I went with a double layer (probably would go single if i did it all over again) Netty - I love the integrated bugnet. I also went with a UST tube tent/tarp. I like the versatility it offers with the fact that I can literally camp in the tarp if i ever needed to, but I should mention I am not counting oz's over here.

Very nice setup. I always wished I started with the Edge tarp. Nice balance of weight and protection.

I have top quilts and found my last trip it was I that couldn't find a place to ground dwell. My buddy who is a hammock forum member didn't have that issue. Just made since a slight weight penalty was worth the set up options.

I wouldn't rely on a hammock situation to be lighter than a tent (hammock+suspension+TQ/UQ+tarp+bugnet ....) but it is a whole lot more comfortable. It is easier to put up a self-standing shelter in a less than optimal location than it is to put up a hammock with only one or no trees

If you are adventuring into unknown regions, you need to be prepared for a "no trees" situation. In that case, I carry two sets of collapsible poles and a ground cloth/pad. The poles allow stringing a tarp and holding up the bugnet. If the net is attached to the hammock, I use the hammock as a bivi bag under the tarp.
