    New to hammock camping

My son and I will be new to hammock camping this year. Looking for ideas on what gear to get that would be good starter gear and not break the bank. Any help is appreciated.

If you know you want to stick with hammocking, buy the best gear you can the first time around. I myself only buy from the cottage vendors. For me, it is the best route. Many stories around about people not enjoying the mass produced stuff you find at outdoor stores. And most of it is made in China. Cottage vendors make everything by hand. Enjoy hanging.

I would highly recommend starting with Hennessey hammocks for both you and your son. The value of having complete systems as beginners cannot be denied. That's a good place to start as did many a long time hanger, myself included. If this "sticks" aka you both love it.. Then in about 2 or 3 years begin your upgrade to the ultra lite world but beware of dutchware. That stuff is highly, highly addictive! Good luck have fun.
No matter where you go...There you are..

Look at arrowhead equipment's starter kits. They are the best quality and most complete you will find.

We will be hiking/backpacking and to start, it'll be spring/summer/early fall. Eventually it'll be some winter camping, but that's down the road.

Agreed with Varga49 here. There are a lot of folks here who give unfair disparagement for the Hennessy product, probably because they've "graduated" to finding something that they like better. But it's a complete kit (including under-insulation, if you get the SuperShelter), and it's very well thought out and reasonably priced. 15% discount for Scouts and Vets as well.

I 2nd the starter kits from arrowhead. I just got the apprentice kit for my first setup...haven't gotten it in the woods yet but I've found a few places around the house to hang out and play with the new toys! Lol. Paul at arrowhead has GREAT customer service and will steer you in the direction of what will work for you...of course that can be said for all the cottage vendors here.
If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.

Thank you for the info guys, you've given me a great place to start. I'm glad I asked here because I was just going to buy us each an eno. I like the look of the arrowhead kits. Do those hennesseys come with the tarp?

Yes, they do. Tarp, suspension, hammock, bugnet, and snakeskins.
