Great video, enjoyed it. The night shot of the fire tower was really beautiful. I think I'm going to pencil this in for March or April.

Great video Paul. I hiked that same trail many years ago and it is a tough trail. Since I am old I am one of those that has to stop for breaks and catch my breath...lol. Guess I need a video camera now
Paul, the website you used to get the Smokies is a great site for any trails in TN and maybe other states. The guy who created it did a great job.
I haven't gotten BC Nav yet but will when I get a new phone as mine probably couldn't handle that much info right now.
how well does BC Nav work offline?

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.
There are times that the only way you can do something is to do it alone.
Appreciate it Ron
I didn't experience any frost. I can't say for certain why not - but I'm thinking it had to do with the cross breeze both nights?
Ha - the snickers bar made for a wonderful breakfast & yes it was easy to chew after being warmed up. I did have some breakfast along but didn't have enough fuel left to boil the water, so snickers bar it was.
Thanks much Stinky
Thanks for the feedback LazyBee. Even after I've done a number of these I'm still not sure whether I should include some things or not.
Such a simple but great idea. I'm going to do this. So many little things to remember & who wants to repeat lessons you've already learned the hard way.
I hope you get out there with your son - these are some great places to visit. Big Creek itself is amazing & I didn't even see that due to the night hike. Just remember Mt. Sterling is 4k gain no matter which way you go
Thanks for taking a looksee Pappy
You are welcome. I love the fire tower. Two others were in camp & I'm not sure they even went up it?! Well I could have been napping, so there is that.
Appreciate it country hang. Still a learning process for me. On trick I've learned is watching the first draft with my wife or somebody & getting a feel for it that way. I've even done that with a neighbor.. that way if I think they are probably bored with a part, then I cut it.
Thanks Caminante.. i'm not much at taking night shots on the GoPro, and lighting up the tower was intentional but also pure luck that it came out. I have around 100 or so that were -meh.
Ha - yes, grab a video camera - it's a lot better asking folks to stop every 10 minutes while you catch your breath
BC Nav - I only use it offline in the field. No cell signal required. My phone is in airplane mode. You load maps and trail data at home before the trip. The app does have some learning curve to it but honestly once I got the hang of it, prepping for a trip takes me like 10 minutes.
I'll have to check out that website some more.. I saw they have all the fire towers across TN on there... may be some more places for me to check out.
Another fine effort on the trail and behind the camera. Thanks for taking us along and letting us learn with you.

Nice video I have done that loop many times , but only during warm weather. I have done the AT part several times over New Years , I like my hammock a lot better than the hard wooden bunks in the shelters !
Good job on the insert. Sure makes that wee bit of wiggle room nice and everything stuff snug enough.
Once you go pod....well, you know.
