Easier to get picked up south and dropped off north...so I hear. More fast food joints South end too for the apres thru-hike munchies.

If I was to just say straight up try this for a 3 day 2 night beginner trip with lots of challenge and easy hiking, views, solitude and beautiful trail, start at Crosby Manitou and hike north to Temperance River State Park. That would just be off the top of my head but its a good time.
I'll highlight that one in the book for sure. Thanks again

That sounds like enough time to see a pretty good bit of the trail and at a great time. Are you aiming to see color change?

Mmmm not a whole lot, I merely mention it on that section as heading north to south both the climbs out of the temperance river valley AND the caribou river valley are long and tedious (for us flatlanders).

If you like hanging in a cedar grove next to a singing river...may I suggest some trips that include the Cross River campsite and the Caribou River multi-group site. My two favorite campsites - among many good ones - so far.

love the SHT. You honestly can't go wrong with any section. The group Midwest Backpackers (link in my signature) does a lot of trips up there.... one planned in a couple weeks actually.

I am also planning to do the SHT this year. I looked at the Crosby Manitou to Temperance River State Park section, which would be really nice, but decided on doing the sections incrementally. As of now my plan is to hike from either the Rose Garden or Martin Road to the SHT headquarters in a few days. Basically, the entirety of Map 2 of the SHT maps.

Be prepared for ice and snow on the trail. Some sort of ice spike will help a lot.
    Have a right goodie.

    From SHT website:
    Conditions
Linking people with nature by footpath along Lake Superior's North Shore.

February 17, 2016: Snow amounts are from 10-36 inches of snow on the trail. From Finland north, the trail in low-lying brushy area has frozen droopy brush over it from a storm before Christmas. The MN DNR updates their snow depth map every Thursday and there is also a link from the page to the National Weather Service snow estimation for the region at this link:http://dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html

There's a presentation tonight on the SHT at midwest mountaineering at 6:30. I'm thinking of checking it out. There's another one mid March too.
