    speer cat tarp 8x10 question

looking for a smaller light weight hammock tarp for the summer to decrease my load.

Looks like speer is having a sale for the cat tarp 8x10. Any experiences with this for the WB Blackbird. Decent coverage for wet weather? As it ALWAYS rains when I hike/camp.

Sorry if this is a duplicate post. Tried the search engine at the site with no luck.

MrsMustardman uses one occasionally - it will provide decent coverage if the rain isn't severely wind blown and you don't choose a lousy site. You can stake the middle tieouts up, and pull the corners in, to close it off somewhat, and help prevent the rain. The only place to be worried would be splashing up from underneath.

You won't have tons of room to cook under the tarp and so on, but you should be able to manage to keep pretty dry.

for the extra 18.00 I would get the winter tarp and use it yr round. Plus the weight difference between the two with guy lines is 3.9 ounces

I have the superfly so that can go for a winter tarp.

I was also looking at OES MacCat Micro... less $$ and weight.... any thoughts on that?

If I'm reading Brian's website correctly, the micro is only 5 feet wide. That's WAY too small IMHO. The eight foot width of the speer 8x10 is about the smallest I would want to go.

I just bought a Winter Dream from Scott at Backwoods Daydreamer for a winter shelter. Although at only 21 oz it may become my permanent tarp.

He also offers an 11x10 option at 20 oz. for $95 in cat cut, or $85 for square cut. He's a great guy to work with, very responsive. I have been doing A LOT of research and think his tarps work best for me. I consider them to be somewhat of a hybrid of the JRB, Speer and OES tarps.

Although I am new to hammocking, it seems to me that he is a smaller, lesser known player in the tarp game compared to the above-mentioned. After all the research I have done over the last 1.5 months it wasn't until yesterday did I come across his website. I exchanged a couple emails with him and bought last night. I can't wait to get it in the mail.

I forgot to mention that he also has a 11x10 hex tarp for $90 at approximately 14 oz.

Scott does seem to be a great guy to do business with...I will get one of his tarps some day
