We have lots of them - they don't bother calm people, but my wife's dog is not calm and never learns. So I pass on this from experience:
Mixture of 1 qt of Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup of Baking Soda, healthy squirt of Dawn Dish soap mixed in a little warm water - works better than tomato juice.

My 7lb Yorkshire Terrior, will go crazy hunting any skunks in the yard, hence the 4 times he's been sprayed. We have dog doors and it quite a surprise when he jumps into bed after being sprayed. The little jerk just won't learn.

I second this! Used it for my dog when he got hit. It worked very well.

Have had close encounters with 2 Peppy Le Pews and must report I found them to be most reasonable. The first time I was camping on a tiny island with my kids. I stayed up late, still and quiet reading my kindle after the everyone went to sleep. Eventually I heard some critter noisily tromping through the bushes. Figured it was a raccoon, but I was surprised to see the biggest skunk I have ever seen when I flipped my headlamp on. He just ignored me and walked through our camp sniffing around for goodies. I silently prayed he wouldn't spray our gear and went back to reading while he plodded around for 20 minutes then left. He didn't seem too worried about anything. Don't think they get bothered by much. Last summer a skunk decided to move into our fenced in backyard. A little guy. I saw him at random times over several days and he mostly avoided us. I tried to encourage him to move on since I both grilled and hung out there and, well he made me nervous. Yelling or throwing a stick in his general direction would cause him to scurry under the fence, which was a relief because I worried he might feel cornered in the fenced in area. After several days of this he took the hint and decided to hang out elsewhere. So I'm cool with them now.

Years ago I had 2 dachshunds one calm and the other crazy little dog. One night I was walking the dogs on 16 ft retractable leashes the calm one was 16 feet ahead and the other was 16 feet behind. I came around the corner and the calm dog was nose to nose wagging her tail with a perfectly at ease skunk. I had one second to think wow that's pretty cool before the second dog reached the corner of the barn and took off at the skunk. I dropped the leashes and went the other way. I heard one yelp. The calm dog came back to me stinking. The crazy one was nowhere to be seen. I found her hiding under a pickup truck. First time I ever saw her calm. Now the crazy dog is 16 years old. She can't hear anymore and can barely see. She does like to lay on me in the hammock though.

Just this weekend I was setting up my hammock to give it its annual dose of pesticide. I had taken it into the woods. One hammock drying, and I'm laying in the other when I smelled the skunk. I didn't ever see it, though, which is fine by me. It put me on high alert for a few minutes, though, because I didn't want it to surprise me, or vice-versa. I've only had a couple of skunk encounters, but that's enough.

    --------------------------

Walking down a trail at a campground. I thought it was going to loop around back to camp, so I walked on farther than I should have, but it never did, and dusk was coming on, and my flashlight was back at camp, so I turned around. Getting darker by the minute, so I almost walked into it. Thank goodness for that white stripe. Snuffling back and forth across the trail, in no hurry. With a steep hill on one side and a river on the other, my only route back to camp was right by that skunk. I tried snapping my fingers (with my arm outstretched, in case it targeted the sound, like that would have mattered). I tried some "Scoot!"'s with no results. I was halfway through a week-long bike tour, and didn't see how getting sprayed by a skunk could improve the trip at all. Also on my way to my freshmen year at college. "Hi, I'm your new room mate. No, I don't always smell this way." While these scenarios run through my head, I also realize that it's going to keep getting darker, and I can barely see the thing now. So I panicked, ran at it, and jumped the skunk. Hit the ground running on the side of it, and didn't look back to see if it had even reacted. Got to school a couple of days later with just my normal amount of stink.

    -----------------------------

One night, staying with my cousin, his wife, and their two German Shepherds. I wake up to yelling. Uncharacteristic, my cousins don't fight, and what did they find to fight about in the middle of the night? Everything calms down, and I fall back to sleep. In the morning, I head into the living room and see my cousin asleep on the easy chair. Must have been some fight. Probably would have been more comfortable on the sofa, though, except I look at the sofa, and there's his wife. Eventually they wake up and explain. A skunk was nosing around outside the bedroom window. One of the dogs decides to leap into action and goes right through the screen of the window. Cousins wake up and start cussing out the dog. The skunk defends itself in the usual manner, and now we've got one very smelly dog, and the whole bedroom has been perfumed.
