I believe there is a rough formula that you can use to estimate combined temp ratings of sleeping bags/quilts. I came accross it here on the forum while I was lurking, and have found it useful as a way to get a ballpark estimate of temp ratings.
Its roughly this: ((First bags temp rating) - ((70-(second bags temp rating))/2))
So for the example of a 0 degree and 40 degree UQ, it would look something like this.
0 - ((70-40)/2)
Which I believe comes out to -15 degrees. Shugs gear on the -40 trip calculates to 0 - ((70-20)/2), which is -25 degrees. So that seems to line up with people saying that the formula is a bit conservative (that, and Shug might be a warm sleeper/wearing additional gear/etc.).
Anyway, just thought you may find that useful when trying to figure out which ratings of quilts/bags/etc to combine.
Good luck finding something that works for you
