I do the figure 8 thing with mine. Have yet to have any tangle issues.

Alternatively....From another post on the spegetti line thread yesterday.

" Wrap the cord around your fingers until 3 feet or so is left... Pull out fingers pinching a bundle of wraps then Frap the remaining length to about 8-10 inches, extend your left fore finger, wrap end over , around and pull a bight thru with your finger...Takes all of 10 seconds per line.

To use..........Pull the bight out by the end... Done.... TANGLE FREE every time.

I don't do pictures.

"Frapping" is a lashing term...When two sticks are first wrapped by the cord in one combining pattern then the wrapping is frapped or wrapped in a cinching pattern so the lashing is thus tight and durable.

After the " bundle" is made on the fingers, simply wrap around the bundle then do the finger extension bight trick...

FWIW, for all you with JRB Self Tensioning Lines (STLs) they come wrapped in the manner described in this quoted thread, but they are paired...In the field simply do each line or STL this way and fold them into the rolled up tarp.... tangle and dangle free...The techniques is fast, simple and guarenteed tangle free with any line...

I do my guide lines something like what I believe Pan was describing.
It starts like Ricegravy's Animated Knot, but I'm looping it around my slightly spread fingers. When there is a little more than a foot of tail left, I slide the loop off by relaxing my fingers & holding the line in place. Then I circle the larger loop several times w/ the remaining tail, then just pull a bite through the last circle.
It's like an exploding knot. When you pull the tail, it pulls the bite out & a little unwinding frees the guy line.

It does work though and the spools are not heavy at all....if I could find glow in the dark ones it would be too cool.

I do ricegravy's trick--learned it at the same site. It always holds well and if you are sure not to allow the line to twist much, doesn't tangle. I really like the line pockets on my HH Sil Hex fly. I wrap the lines as above and stuff them into the pockets. Very neat and non-tangling. I use skins on that tarp and just leave the ridgelines out so I can tie it up easily. They haven't tangled yet.

On my new JRB tarp I just wrap the lines as above and stuff the whole thing into the stuff sack. Neat and easy.
