Containing tarp lines

I roll my tarp up and stuff it in net tubes, so the guy lines on the sides of my tarp are neatly contained and do not come out of their nifty obsessive bundles.
However, since I also strap my tarp to the outside of the pack, the ridgeline guys - sticking out of end of the tubes - sometimes escape, start flopping around, and come unwound, which I find Very Annoying!

Someone posted about the Exped cord stuff sacks and I like that idea. I also like the hair-elastic loop idea someone else posted (can't remember who posted either of these). So I whipped up one sack of my own and put it on one end of my tarp and I'll try a hair elastic on the other and see which I like better.

Now, I made my sack out of silnyl since that is what I grabbed out of the scrap pile, and I think regular ol' ripstop would be much better and less slippery, of course. But I was on a roll and did not want to go digging for another piece.


I did a "test" of my usual wrapping method and it took two vigorous shakes to get the line to start pulling out of its bundle.


I decided to attach the bottom of the sack to my tarp pull out with a cord loop sewn into the bottom of the bag, stick the loop through the pull out and stuff the sack through the loop. I also decided to add shockcord to the opening: just long enough that - fully stretched out - it fits over 3 fingers.

I started trying to wrap it like the Exped sacks show, but that did not survive even a single shake.


Then I wrapped the line up like I usually do and stuck that in the sack.


Success! Two shakes did not send the line flying around.


This needs some more work on my part, but that'll have to wait.

I've been trying to simplify all of my equipment, yet still keep it as convenient to use as possible. Here's what I do:

-roll the side guy lines up with the tarp
-slide the no-see-um tube over the tarp
-roll up one ridge line just like you do eay
-fold the tarp into a bundle
-wrap the bundle with the remaining ridge line

It forms a nice tight package that packs well and doesn't come loose.



edit - eay, not meaning to diminish your stuff sack idea, just offering an alternative.

Neat idea!

I always store my guy lines as shown here.
I have never had them shake lose.

No diminishment! I have been puzzling over storing the pesky lines and figured my sack implementation narrative would spark some discussion.

Alternatively....From another post on the spegetti line thread yesterday.

" Wrap the cord around your fingers until 3 feet or so is left... Pull out fingers pinching a bundle of wraps then Frap the remaining length to about 8-10 inches, extend your left fore finger, wrap end over , around and pull a bight thru with your finger...Takes all of 10 seconds per line.

To use..........Pull the bight out by the end... Done.... TANGLE FREE every time.

No extra pockets, ties, or wrap cords needed... no extra weight... Works wet or dry in under 10 seconds a line... try it..."

Do you have any pictures or a video of how to do that? I know that my wife could figure that out in a second, but I am more of a visual learner. (thats a nice way of saying I'm not very smart)

I looked up "frap" but all I got was general definitions,nothing specific. Can you please explain what you mean by frapping?

The description sounds very much like the animated knot you linked to.
