Well, 6 of us are all in for a lost creek wilderness excursion. Will be flying out Aug 13, and back Aug 20th. Pretty much all of our time in between will be spent outside, with our final night at the house to clean up before flying home. Our intention is to just get to the trail head the first day, hike a short distance in, and relax. Thanks to each of you for the info!

Anybody have a lead on a good topo map that also incorporates the trails out there? Also, looking into water sources along the route. Any help is appreciated!

not from the area but do live at a slight elevation here in the black hills (5,000') and i know people that come here from sea level and feel a bit crappy for a day or two, you will be doing about and 8,000' elevation gain, i would take a day to get used to the elevation, imo.......lots of water and ibuprofen

I'd recommend the Nat Geo Trails Illustrated maps. Good enough quality for a general trip planning on well traveled trails and they show water sources. I looked and the one you want looks to be:
    https://www.rei.com/product/776989/t...opographic-map

I have this one and just opened it up - it shows a good portion of Lost Creek Wilderness. I'd look especially along the Colorado Trail. It'll be a bit busier but is very pretty and usually crosses water frequently. You could try the Colorado Trail site and/or guidebook. The guidebook especially will list specific water source information, more specific mileage, etc. for along that particular trail.

Enjoy! It's an amazing state and nice, low-altitude area. If you have any specific questions on that area/route, feel free to PM me and I can offer some additional advice on trip planning, Colorado-specific things, etc. as I have pretty extensive backpacking experience in Colorado.
