Lightbulb Another Imusa Mod, HEAT SYNC!

    Hey Everyone!

Have I got a mod for you! I've added a heat sync to the bottom of my Imusa12!

    20160311_150745.jpg

I couldn't find an affordable one on Amazon, so I purchased two pairs of these: http://amzn.com/B00REFPLVM

glued them to the bottom of a new Imusa with this: http://amzn.com/B0087X725S

    and now I have this!
    20160311_150735.jpg

I then conducted a pretty aggressive experiment. I normally use a 2oz bottle of fuel to boil 3-4 cups of water. For this test I reduced the fuel (Everclear) to 1 carefully measured ounce and three cups of room temperature water. I use a cheap Trangia knockoff stove (love it!). The heat sync pot was steaming by 7 minutes, talking by 8 minutes, and was at a full rolling boil at 10:20. The fuel expired between 12 and 13 minutes.

    Here's my setup:

    Ain't she a beaut!!!??

I then repeated the experiment with the regular Imusa. The poor thing wasn't even steaming by 13 minutes when the flame died. This mod re-sizes my fuel needs considerably, and man is it cool!

We're getting downright fancy here in Sector Eight! Yeah Buddy!! - Rocket

Also, I'm pretty proud of my hi-tech Imusa lid! It's made entirely from a CD, a little circle of reflectix, and duct tape.

    Cool!

How / with what adhesive did you glue them to the bottom?

    Nothing but the best! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0087X725S

It's made for that purpose, NOT made for these temperatures, but it survived the test with flying colors so we're off to a good start! - Rocket

How much weight did they add to your Imusa pot? Most people that use one of these are looking to save weight.

Amazon says 37g (so it'd be double that at 54g), but that sounds super high. I am very ashamed to say that - despite how much i love backpacking and hiking - I do not own one of those ounce/gram scales that everybody has. I'm not even going to guess. I will say, however, that I'll now keep 1oz less in my cook kit per planned boil, and even at 54g that is less than 2oz, so I could have a net win here.

    Great question.

Now that's a neat idea! I've got several of those heat sinks attached to Peltier units. You can find them in any cheap refrigerator or small thermoelectric cooler, often times running on 12 V DC.

Your comparative boil test is impressive. Yes, that is a significant gain -- but I'm still not sure I'd want to add the weight and sharp square edges to my cookpot.

Regardless, kudos on the thought and follow through! I'll watch to see where this goes…

Do you really use ever clear? I guess that is a good use its too strong for me. Neat idea by the way. I wonder if you could make a heat sync/pot stand somehow if the glue doesn't hold up.
