Question Plastic hooks (the ones with Prussik knot)

I have broken both of them. The second one broke last night. The hammock has been hanging on My yard three weeks. I have been waiting for truly cold temperatures to test My "Two under covers and pad + one overcover" -system.

Is there I design problem or are those hooks weak by choice of the manufacture? The good thing about weak hooks for tarp is that tarp does not brake if there is too much tension for example when wind blows hard.

What do You think? Has this happened to You?

(When the first one got broke, Tom send Me two spare ones, so I am covered in that sense)

I don't think so ... weak by design. They're just plastic mitten hooks .. google them and you can find a lot of sources for them. You could always just get a set of those mini-biners like is sold on the HF store ... and use them on on the prusik loops. Just a thought.

So far I've never had one break on me ... on any of the HH I've got.

Same here, they have never broke. But for a while I have used the smallest adjustable screw links from Harbor Freight, but I think mini biners are a great idea also. Probably don't weigh much more than the hooks in actual grams. The reason I don't just use my unbroken ( after 2 plus years) mitten hooks? Because I stuff the entire hammock and SS ( and sometimes top quilt) into one large compression stuff sack, or straight into a pack. With the hooks that came with my HH, there is no "gate", and all of the connections come loose when packed. Every thing stays put with the screw links/biners.

Good advice already given, you could just use a toggle as well.

    No problemo

The reason I was wondering about plastic hooks is the general quality of the Hennessy Hammock's. I have personally used Hilleberg tents, and those do not have any bad components.

If one uses weak plastic hooks... how about other materials? The ones I'm most worried about are elastic bands used as side of the hammock and at the entrance. Are those also good when temperature goes down to sub -10 Celcius (14 Fahrenheit) or do they snap or lose their elasticity?

I was also very surprised to broke My hammock within few weeks when I have been reading people using them many years without ANY problems - how plausible is that?

Can't tell you ... never had my down that low ... but I've used HH since 2001 and never had a mitten hook fail or the bungee cords freeze up. They work just fine to keep the tension on the pullouts and allow some give.

Can't say on why you had failure when others don't. Guess we're all different. My brother-in-law could be given an anvil and have it broken in less than a week!

Could be a bad lot of hooks as well, just a fluke. You may call Hennessey and see, he might just replace them under warranty. Or, you could use toggles...
