Well, in theory, you do have five months where overnight lows are 60* F or above in NC. However, I find that the weather information we can access is for populated areas, not necessarily wilderness. Once you get out in the woods, far from asphalt and other heat-radiating surfaces, you can have a much different experience than what the Weather Channel tells you. I had one night where the nearest weather station said the overnight low would be 18* F, but when I got to the campsite at 6 pm it was 13* F and the eventual overnight low was -3 * F. That's why I always build in a 10* cushion on which quilts I take because there's no way I want to sleep in 40* weather in a 40* TQ/UQ. Been there/done that - not fun.

Never, or just about so. My 20-degree is my "go to" UQ for most hikes. I do have a folded-double DIY PLUQ that I might use island kayak camping in the true summer.

But, at elevation in the mountains, in the clouds/fog, with a strong breeze blowing chilly, moist wind under me? 45 degrees just doesn't cut it for me.

The only times I prefer my 40* Pheonix partial UQ is in very warm (near 70-ish) weather or when backpacking with temps above 40*, with the primary reason for pack space saving (and secondary reason for weight saving). If it's colder than 40, I prefer my full length quilts. For fixed location camping or kayak camping in most temps, I also prefer full length quilts.

I'm in Charlotte & enjoy taking my WL Summer UQ out. If the weather is questionable, I might pair it with an UQ protector to keep the wind from blowing away some warmth. Add my Nalegene bottle in case I need to do the hot water trick & maybe my down coat.. I can get quite a bit of use out of my Summer UQ.

I live in N Ga and have that same quilt. I get 4-5 months out of it. Once the temps are getting down around 50 I bring a piece of pad just in case to stick under my back. I have taken it down to it's 45* limit without using the pad though.
