    An old idea dug up.

Hey HF, I was digging through this archived thread:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...p/t-67295.html

Using a single piece of amsteel with a locked brummel girth hitched to the loop of your tree hugger, the suspension would connect to the hammock with a continuous loop hanging on a marlinspike/toggle tied to the single line of amsteel.

In the thread rather than using the marlinspike, they drilled a hole through a wood dowel and tied half hitches on it. Is there a reason why the marlinspike/toggle wasn't working? Are the radii too tight to maintain integrity of the amsteel? I dont see why it's so different than the angles used in narcabiners. It seems as though this idea was abandoned, and Im not quite sure the reason.

Failure most likely. Either it was the toggle breaking, the half hitch coming off the toggle, or the Amsteel due to compression.

well I never saw any results of having the amsteel fail. Mostly toggle and half hitches coming off... but if you tied off the toggle with a marlin spike it solves those problems and leaves only the possibility of amsteel failing which Im doubtful of as I dont see much difference in stress applied to a soft shackle... but experience trumps theory.
