Using a single piece of amsteel with a locked brummel girth hitched to the loop of your tree hugger, the suspension would connect to the hammock with a continuous loop hanging on a marlinspike/toggle tied to the single line of amsteel.
In the thread rather than using the marlinspike, they drilled a hole through a wood dowel and tied half hitches on it. Is there a reason why the marlinspike/toggle wasn't working? Are the radii too tight to maintain integrity of the amsteel? I dont see why it's so different than the angles used in narcabiners. It seems as though this idea was abandoned, and Im not quite sure the reason.
