    Making an Under Quilt

I am just getting into hammock camping and have some spare sleeping bags lying around that I could use to make an under quilt. I was thinking about cutting one in half and just using the bottom section as the under quilt. Does anyone have any ideas into how I could attach the sleeping bag to the bottom of my hammock?

Definitely at the ends and possibly on the sides. The channels at the ends allow you to create a tight seal at the head and foot of the underquilt to prevent wind from sneaking in and robbing your body heat like a thief in the night. The optional side channels allow you to slide the UQ closer to the head or foot end until you feel like it's in the right place. Otherwise you just need a tie-out point on each corner of the rectangle to add suspension too. If you do decide to do the side channel route, then you use a big piece of shock cord that runs all the way around the perimeter of the UQ (but doesn't go through the end channels, it goes outside them and hooks on the hammock) and you will need some cord locks where it attaches to the hammock to adjust the length. Then you add 4 pieces of cord or shock cord to the tie out points that will Prussic onto the suspension shock cord. This will keep the UQ in place once you moved it to where you want it.

My experience has been that half a sleeping bag is too narrow for an underquilt to provide good shoulder coverage. YMMV. I have always cut down the sides of the bag but never in half.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
