15- 20 ft is the best distance. you have to account for the suspension triangle and the fact that you have 20 degree hang angle so all the resources on gathered end hammocks aren't really useful to you.

I camp in bear country and I am a bear Burrito.
But it can fit within a 12 foot span. I'd say that's about minimum though.
