    Backpack Quilt Pack Hack

Thanks to the hammock forum community and the many amazing youtube videos out there (Shug), I have quickly learned what I need to successfully survive in the wild for a few days. With this video, "Backpack Quilt Pack Hack", I begin giving back to the community with hacks I pick up along the way. This first video shows a pretty cool way to squish your quilts pretty dang small when you are on the trail.

Thanks for posting this. I wouldn't personally use it for backpacking but I do like using space saver bags when traveling and have to pack luggage.

Thanks for the reply. I"m wondering what downside you see that I don't... or just different preference?

I don't see why this is a bad idea. I mean you wouldn't want to store it this way, but the guy says that. Much less bulk, water proof, economical(prob more so than some swanky purpose built bag) I'd sure try it, and probably will.

Looks good if you're currently using compression sacks. I like to smoosh my quilts in the bottom of my pack (lined with a trash compactor bag) and pile the rest of my gear on/in/around it. It fills in and takes up the space left by voids around my other gear.

I tried using compression sacks and even stuff sacks for a while but didn't like the hard shape in my pack taking up space. Just a different style of packing.

I believe there is a school of thought that compressing too much will damage the loft capabilities of the down. I love the idea, but have no information on the effects to down. I personally packed this way for my trip to Ireland (regular luggage) and it made a huge difference.

What were the temp ratings on your quilts and were they regular/long/short, wide/reg/narrow?

Ouch that rolling looks painful for the quilt! No seriously, I really like this idea, but I think simply pressing it down would be better for the quilt. That tight rolling seems like it could tear the fabric or damage the down. But I'm just making assumptions...thoughts?

Overall, this looks like the best way to pack small and keep waterproof without over-compressing that often happens with compression sacks (straps using mechanical advantage to really pack them down)

I typically just stuff my quilts in the bottom of my pack, but this looks like it would be worth a try. If I didn't like it, I imagine it would be great for traveling, so it wouldn't be a waste of $16. Thanks for the video!

I've been stuffing both quilts in the bottom of my pack, but it still takes of a lot of space. Sometimes the sack starts refilling with air before I can get everything else in on top, no matter what I do. I'm also thinking the big BALL of down this method creates throws the center of gravity further back, making the pack ride less comfortably than it could. So this idea definitely has my interest.
