    Top quilt liners

    Things to know:
    1. I am not a winter camper. (I ski and then I go inside to drink)
    2. I own a Jarbidge 3 season.
    3. I just purchased a used UGQ Flight Jacket 50 with 2oz overstuff.
    4. I am a somewhat warm sleeper.
    5. I would consider myself in between light and ultralight (base pack weight of 11 pounds.)
    6. I am willing and have slept in my puffy.

Knowing all of this, would any of you with experience say that a simple liner like the one from jrb be sufficient to take my quilts into the shoulder seasons? Or should I consider another top quilt in the 30 degree range?

I give it a somewhat confident "maybe".

Since you're not an SUL'er, I say get the quilt for the temps you'll use it in. Rely on clothing to extend it - the ounces are better spent on extra down: warm puffy or quilt. More versatile, too.

I took a 20° TQ down to -20° with the JrB liner, so I would say the claim in their video is about right. Your UQ will dictate the temps you'll be comfortable at more than what's on top.

I use a flight jacket 50 down to 25-30ish with great results. I sleep warm though

I appreciate the input. The weather looks good for a test this weekend...clear and around 40* so it should give me a good baseline. I have a light fleece blanket I will use as a stand in for the liner and we will see if it works.

So this weekend I had a test run and the fleece layer is not adding enough warmth to the FJ. It helped get me down to about 43* with relative comfort but the low of 37* forced me into my sleeping bag I had brought as insurance. I guess the moral of the story here is that I am not as warm a sleeper as I thought. I decided to bite the bullet and ordered a complete Loco Libre 30* setup. I think I would rather carry a couple extra ounces than risk being miserable a few nights a year. Thanks for the input everyone.

Yeah, I'd say carry the weight of the quilts you need. A cold night is never fun. I've had a few of them. A hot water bottle will help quite a bit in a pinch.
