I used to lash tons of expensive scientific equipment, bouys and boxes on deck in the North Atlantic in winter. We used lots of friction hitches. Even if it did not rain, icy spray would freeze on everything.

I usually chose 1/4" Manilla because it shrinks when it gets wet, and our orders were to make our lashings 'tighter than tight'. However, none of our knots slipped when they froze. They froze in place, and held just fine.

We had the same results with synthetic line. We never worried that any knot would slip when frozen. As a matter of fact, the fishermen among us had a particular knot for lashing the bag of a net, so they could untie it when it was frozen. It was a slipped knot, and the bitter end had an eye spliced into it. They put the eye on a strap with a hook, and ran that to the winch to break it free, dumping a load of fish on deck.

Good news. I just checked the thermometer on my ridge-line and it's at ~32*. There is still plenty of ice on the deck from yesterday's precipitation (an empty promise of 1"-3") and no signs of thawing. I watered down the lines as well as I could. Hopefully it will freeze up soon and I can do the testing during the day. A video of me plummeting to the earth during the day would be much better right?

    Test Results

I completed my field test. First off I wish I had a video of the nut-job that was watering his whoopie slings with a watering can every 20 min last night.

I woke up to a perfect skating rink all around me and two 'Slim-Jims' for whoopie slings.

Although I did not mark them, I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that they did not move at all over night. They would not budge prior to a hand warming. A few seconds of massage freed them up quite nicely. Of note, when playing with length adjustment, I sucked an ice pellet into the channel. I think I was more upset than the whoopie. It looked like a snake swallowed a rat. I slid it out and removed it with no ill effects to the whoopie or it's holding power.

I also played at one end and partial thawing. When trying to adjust, without a complete thaw, the whoopie just bunched up at the juncture of ice and wetness. That was fun and leads me to believe I had sufficiently iced them down to mimic 'field' icing.

    In summation: Whoopies love winter
