Can whoopie slings freeze up?

I did 4 nights in big south fork, temps were below freezing every night, as i wokeup platypus bottles were frozen, boots were frozen, whooppies frozen, just shook em off, whacked em a few times, and when i stowed them in my pack, i let hte slings dangle and secured them with the elastic on the back of my pack. problem solved, were dry when i reached camp again the next night, honestly not a big deal for me during winter.

I completed my field test. First off I wish I had a video of the nut-job that was watering his whoopie slings with a watering can every 20 min last night.

I also played at one end and partial thawing. When trying to adjust, without a complete thaw, the whoopie just bunched up at the juncture of ice and wetness. That was fun and leads me to believe I had sufficiently iced them down to mimic 'field' icing.

In summation: Whoopies love winter

When you were watering your slings, did the loose end act sufficiently as a drip stopper? It seems that whoopie slings have built in water diverters with that extra line hanging down, right?

I've found that they don't always handle all of the water. I was counting on them at Linville. It started raining a little after noon. Late afternoon I was sitting in the hammock and noticed water following a wrinkle into the hammock to where I was sitting. I got up and checked. The whoopie ends were under the tarp like they should be, and the rain was coming straight down, not blowing in. I tied another softer drip line inside of the loose whoopie ends, and that stopped the leakage. When the amsteel tightens up under load it is about like a piece of wire. Some of the water just seemed to run right by the loose end. I did have a pretty slack hang too, so gravity and acceleration may have played a part.

Worked fairly well. It was the water (soon to be ice) on the deck I was concerned about.

I miss it too Shug! The roads along both ridges are still solid ice from the snow
