    Knoxville Help

So this isn't "Hammock" per say, but I was hoping this hiking community could help me find something locally (live in North Knoxville), and I have a friend who has never hiked(besides what the military has made him) and his autistic 2 yearold son who want to hike. I'm trying to find a very easy hike that is not too far to get them started out, most of what I know is GSM, and thats a little over an hour for us. probably too much driving for first timer. any suggestions are much appreciated. google isn't much help

Ijams Nature Center. It is the best place for a short non strenuous hikes that are fun for the whole family. There is also the added bonus of the neat animals and educational information in the visitors center.

You have all kinds of options less than an hour drive from you. Try your wildlife management areas. Check each one out in the hunting guide for WMA specific regulations. North Cumberland WMA is about 30 miles north of you and is 190,000 acres. You also have Forks of the River WMA in Knox County. It has certain restrictions during hunting season but several trails and paths suited for little feet. Feel free to pm me if you need more info

What about something in the Big South Fork. Lots of options to make whatever trip you want. My first thought is to stage out of the Bandy Creek Campground and make what ever loop you want.

How about Fontana - across the dam and a little way up the trail on the north side of the lake, then back to car.

Check at the REI store. They at one time had a map of Kville with tons of trails most would not even know existed. Not necessarily "in the wilderness'' but in the woods at least.

Tennessee Trails Association, whatever chapter is in Knoxville. Right up your alley.

Also perhaps www.meetup.com and search for a hiking meetup group under "Knoxville."
