help a noob out, are these like snake skins but mesh?

what's the benefit of something like this over just stuffing your tarp in a pocket of your pack?..

Yes, they are mesh snake skins. I like the mesh, as it doesn't trap air.

The benefit is manageability when hanging your tarp, especially in the wind. Also, it allows you to deploy the tarp, still in skins, and leave it that way until it is needed. Then it makes for quick deployment once it starts to rain.

manageability is the main feature, as far as preventing mold or mildew they dont really help,, yes they will dry out the outer layer but if you roll up your tarp wet ,the inner layers are not gonna get air inside to help it dry out no matter what kind of skins you use.
If you have to roll up your tarp wet you will still need to unroll it first chance you get and dry it out.. The mesh skins are lighter then solid ones though

Yes i agree, that it won't prevent mold or mildew per say, but if its put away wet you can slide these over tarp and hang on the outside of pack and get some drying... I know that once you roll it up it will retain water. So yes open as soon as you get to camp or home...
