Because I am very cold natured (can get chilled in 60º weather) I always wind up with too heavy of a pack on winter trips or I just chicken-out. Well the low expected for Saturday night here was 24º. I decided to experiment.
I have a HH Adventure Racer I bought used over a year ago and never tried. I even had 2Q install a zipper in it. It now weighs 14 oz. I hung it in the back yard Saturday afternoon. I pitched my JRB 11x10 cat tarp in a winter tent like mode. I hung my summer Yeti with reflective liner under the hammock and then placed a partially inflated NeoAir inside and spread out my new Go Lite Ultra 20.
Around 11:00 pm after wonderful day of watching football (Roll Tide Roll) I headed to the backyard to turn in. I was wearing light wool long bottoms, dri ducks rain pants, wool sleeping socks, Mountain Hardwear zip-t polar fleece top, a beanie, JRB down hood and Go Lite down jacket. The temp was 26º and I was very toasty and comfortable.
I was really impressed with how comfortable I was in this small hammock. I really appreciated the comfort of the NeoAir. I was actually more comfortable with the NeoAir than I am in my Blackbird with just underquilts. I sleep on my left side and always wake on and off with my shoulder hurting but not so with the NeoAir. I only woke once at around 2:00 am when nature called and it was nice to have on all of that clothing when I emerged from my cocoon. The temp was 23º at 5:30 and I was still very warm and comfortable.
