So...in Dollar General stores (and possibly elsewhere) they sell a product called Hot Shot Flea, Tick and Lice killer in a spray can. They advertise it for use on carpets furniture and dog bedding. It is a .5% Permethrin solution and best of all...it only costs $3.50 for a 14 ounce can. Hot Shot sells other products but I believe only the one labeled for fleas, ticks and lice contain permethrin.

My daughter and I just returned from hiking/hammock camping four days and three nights in the Ozark National Forest tromping through heavy brush with nary a single tick between us. We thoroughly pre-treated all our clothes, including shoes and socks, and our hammocks with permethrin.

Dilute it 20:1 (about 6 ounces (3/4 cup) per gallon), dip your clothes/hammock/bugnet/etc., let dry and you are good to go. Like others have said, I've seen blood suckers hit the net and fall dead - quite satisfying, really.

From what I've been told, it doesn't store well. I just use the left over to wipe down the window screens in the house and pour the rest outside the doors and porch area, or anywhere else I don't care to be "bugged".

I was under the impression that, once mixed with water, permethrin is only good for six weeks. After I spray my clothes, I usually do the same as Perrito and spray some area in the yard where I don't want mosquitoes. Since I live next to a swamp, I have a lot of areas I don't want mosquitoes!

I'm sure it will be 109% miserable, but I have a feeling I won't be able to wait until fall this year. Head net, lemon eucalyptus repellent, pants and long sleeve shirt is all I can do I guess.
You might consider gaiters. The low ones closing the gap at boots/pants. I do spray mine with permethrin but the physical barrier would help. Last year I got a bad case of Lyme Disease. It's nasty.

19:1 to get to 0.5% is what I do. Dose as close to 6.4oz of permethrin as you can get into a gallon jug and then fill with water.
