I think that is a good plan, and will make a difference. The nice thing about that is, that if you run into an extra big tree or very long gap between trees, you can slide the flyz all the way to the tree. You will give up the "v" and have to live with some tarp interference with your suspension for a night, but you have peace of mind knowing that your tarp suspension can handle the problem trees in a pinch.

I would definitely recommend going with a V set-up. I don't see any advantages in a Y. You could also hang your tarp with a single line (I) and avoid additional rub by simply having hammock ridgeline and tarp ridgeline run at a slight angle, a bit like an X but not as extreme. This way, suspensions won't touch. The hammock suspension will touch the tarp itself, but as soon as you get into the hammock, the suspension should move away from the tarp.

And good luck threading the Flyz onto the WB split ring I tried and gave up because I couldn't get the split ring to open up far enough... I ended up splicing an endless loop on the Flyz and larksheading them onto the split ring.

Good info. Funny I'm just not running into this after 4+ years. I've been in some big rain with my WBBB, but that 6" shorter really helps me feel more secure. But my goto hammock now is 10.5 and I won't give it up because it's so comfortable, so I want to make sure I nail this down. Worst case scenario, the first few inches of my hammock gets damp...no big deal I guess.

When I first started I used a 10.5 ft hex tarp over an 11 ft hammock, it looked like if the rain was to heavy the hammock would get wet, but I never had a problem with it and I had it out in some pretty good rain

Don't forget, if you use a single line type of tarp suspension instead of a V or Y, you can put this on the leftish side of the tree and the hammock suspension on the rightish side. This way, the lines will not rub or touch each other.

This is how I hang my gear hammock next to my hammock. Each are on the sides of the trees to keep them separated and I have my gear hanging next to me.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I use a DIY 12' hammock with a SuperFly with an 11' ridge line. Works great for me - I make sure my tarp is pitched nice and taut, and I get a small, but sufficient amount of coverage.

But I also cut my teeth on a Hennessy asym tarp where there is ZERO room for error, and I learned a lot from that old tarp.

I don't want to go back to that, so I'm wondering if I should get a 12' tarp. Here's a photo of my setup. You can see that the buckle is protected by the tarp, but not by much. I think any wind would easily blow rain in there. In serious rain I would put the porch mode down, but still I'm worried. And you can see I already had the tarp all the way down to the ground (no cordage left over to pull tighter). I guess I could have spread it out wider to get lower, but that would have been a lot more that I'm used to.

Besides, any lower and my hammock webbing starts rubbing on the tarp cordage.

I don't see the issue. Are you having a moisture issue, or is this in your head? Not belittling the latter as those things do matter. But do you have a dry hammock and a nice light-colored hex underneath it after rain?

Pics look like what I'm used to seeing with mine.

IF you are worried about your buckles being exposed you can try double larks heading your continuous loop, thus bringing your buckle closer to your hammock and more underneath.

This was my initial thought in keeping lines from rubbing but then I have never worried about such things myself.
A 12' tarp is massively long and over kill in most cases unless you want to use it to form doors or a large area to hang out under during rain.
Too me you just over thought everything and just need to bring the tarp down lower in really adverse/windy conditions but hey... you just sorta talked yourself into some new kit......sooo
