What to do when the bobbin runs out of thread in mid-seam, and how to prevent it.

I wind bobbins for and use them on the top and bottom. ... Not sure its the best method, but its simple, easy, and doesn't cost anything .

It's not the best method, it's also not simple and it costs you a lot of time when u use a bobbin for the top thread too. My top thread is about 2000m long and I consider the big industrial Gütermann kingspools as the by far cheapest and easiest solution.

With a little training and experience you know when it's time to look at the bobbin thread. Best and easiest method:

- Start longer sewing projects (where you want your bobbin thread unbrocken) always with a full bobbin.
- In all other cases don't bother if the bobbin threads runs out. Make proper lock stitches, rewind the bobbin and sew the rest of your stitch lines.
- Buy at least two or three bobbins. I have much more but don't need more than five for three different threads.

Interesting. I'll respectfully disagree that it's not simple, but that's mostly personal preference, so that's fine.

On my machine there isn't a way to wind another bobbin with the top still threaded, which could be why I don't think it adds any time to things. I could of course wind a few spare bobbins before hand, and swap them out. I've just never started/installed a new bobbin in the middle like that. Maybe I'll try it out next time.

The rest of the tips I totally agree with though. Nothing more annoying than starting a line of stitching and having the bobbin run out just after you start.

You can buy an extra bobbin winder.

or use something like a electric drill or hand mixer for bobbin winding. I don't need such tools.

I said it already. One of the most important skills I had to learn too was to make proper lock stitches with a hand needle and little invisible knots at the end and the beginning of a sewing line.

I make little knots (double overhand knots with two thread ends) also between two fabric layers and/or hide the thread ends. You can always do it in such a way that you won't see any knots or thread ends. This is the reason why I'm not worried that the bobbin thread could run out.
