Hey everyone. Call me Dread. I'm a 35 year old father of an 8 year old (9 this month) boy and I'm looking to get into hammock camping as a father/son activity. I just purchased some inexpensive things from Amazon in order to make that happen by the end of the month (which is his birthday) and if we like it, I plan on buying better gear.

I'm in Central Texas and I joined the forum mainly to find out about good places to hang. I welcome any and all advice and I'm happy to have joined what looks to be a lovely community. Thanks!

    Happy Birthday
I would get 11 foot by 5 foot gathered end hammocks. And separate bug nets and or bug spray. Below 65 degrees you will need insulation--closed cell foam pads are cheaper than down filled under quilts. I can't remember the brand--I got a 40 x72 x 3/8 foam pad--no way I'm goons slip off edge of pad and it can be trimmed to size if that's too large. I see all the time here--campers slipping off edge of pad and getting cold. And you will need tarps and rope and cords. Try to get a poly strap rather than a nylon strap as its not gonna stretch as much and leave you dragging ground in morning. Happy Birthday to your hammock Kiddo!

Thanks for the welcome, Phantom! And for the birthday wishes. I'm trying to get him outside more with a gift like this. Haha!
