Ok folks. June 11th and 12th it is. I'll be up at Lake Tahoe this weekend so I'll be driving right past the area where we will be and I'll try to see if the snow level is down enough to hike. On a normal snow year this area could easily be snowed in as late as July. But although we've had more snow this year than past drought years, it's also been warm and wet so I expect the snow level will be manageable. Also, a week or two before the trip I'll drive up and check out the trail head to see what the snow situation is.
My wife made a suggestion: Just in case there's too much snow at that level, we should have an alternate plan. For our alternate I suggest the Lake Spaulding trail which is in the same area off of the same road, but it's about 2000 feet lower in elevation. The Spaulding trail is also a bit flatter. Also, if the original "Glacier Lakes/Five Lakes" trip feels like it may be too difficult even in good weather then this may also be a good alternative. The Lake Spaulding trail is about 5 miles long to a nice set of campsites near a beautiful trout creek. It's flatter with only one big hill near the trailhead. There will likely be day hikers along the first mile or so but the hikers tend to thin out quickly after about 2 miles. Either way, they're both beautiful spots which will give you a real Sierra Mountain Experience. I've hiked both and I don't think the Lake Spaulding trail is any less of a trail.

I'll try to make it out, I work in Nevada City so it's not very far for me.
I'm switching to a hammock and hope to join you all if I can get my gear together in time. This trip sounds like a great opportunity to test my stuff and meet other hangers and see what you all use. Hope I can make it!
Hopefully I get my new tarp before this trip comes up. Just ordered a Monster Fly from Charlie last night. Looking forward to it. The trip and the new gear.

On my calendar, although will have to see how my knee heals. Took a fall and landed on my left knee. Walk like an old man, which I am.
My wife and I just got back from a 3 night trip to South Lake Tahoe (a hotel, casino, and drinking trip. Not a camping trip) It got down to about 30 degrees last night so it wasn't too bad at all. We drove past the area where we'll be hiking on the June trip and the snow looked pretty clear from the hiway. The backup Lake Spaulding area was absolutely clear of snow.
I'm getting excited!
Sounds about right. I was backpacking this weekend in Carson-Iceberg Wilderness (Burgson Lake: 6,400 ft elevation), and conditions were the same there. Just a few scattered patches of snow on the ground, but nothing more than that. Overnight temperatures hit about 30 there as well. Great weekend to be out in the sierras!
